Nigeria Nears Appointment of New Ambassadors After 18-Month Vacancy

ABUJA: The Nigerian government has begun reviewing potential candidates to fill ambassadorial positions in over 100 diplomatic missions, with official appointments expected soon, sources familiar with the matter revealed.

Since President Bola Tinubu recalled all ambassadors in September 2023, Africa’s most populous nation has been without formal diplomatic representation abroad. The delay in appointing new envoys has been attributed to financial constraints, according to the foreign affairs ministry.

However, a government source confirmed that the funding issue is being addressed, paving the way for imminent appointments. Intelligence agencies have commenced background checks on nominees and have started sharing their findings with relevant authorities in the presidency and legislature.

Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has prioritized economic recovery over foreign policy. However, with a budget of 302.4 billion naira ($198.30 million) allocated for Nigeria’s foreign missions this year, the process of appointing ambassadors appears to be gaining momentum.

A former Nigerian ambassador, who previously served in Africa and the United States, confirmed that assurances had been given at high levels that new ambassadors would be named soon.
